“We will show that tourism is an area with hope”

42 national and international companies gathered at the Church of the Convent of São Francisco to “provide support” to young people at the beginning of their careers. The Tourism Job Fair in the Center aims to help connect those interested in the tourism sector with entities that need new workers. Although its focus is mainly on new graduates and students in areas related to tourism (hotels, restaurants, among others) entering the job market, all visitors can take advantage of the same training and employment opportunities offered by the event.
This was the third initiative carried out by the Employability Exchange in 2025. First in the Algarve, then in the Alentejo, now in Coimbra and, in the future, Lisbon (March 14) and Porto (March 26). The aim, as Cláudia Santos, events and sales manager at the Employability Exchange, tells us, is to show that “tourism is an area with hope, vitality and resilience”. These are some of the key words that she hopes can bring a revitalized attractiveness to the sector, and new growth.
Of the approximately 1,200 people who visited the Convento S. Francisco, nearly 700 were students from various educational institutions around the country. “This trip to Coimbra, to the central area, is important to show that there are many institutions interested in hiring and contacting this new generation,” stresses the manager. This is an event that also promotes networking, highlighting contact between those looking to start a career and those who have already established themselves in the market, whether as individuals or as renowned companies.
This edition focused on helping young people take their first step into the job market. In a conversation with the companies Hoti Hotéis and Termas do Bicanho, Diário de Coimbra discovered that one of the fears of new workers ends up being the lack of experience. Students feel that the lack of activities prior to entering the job market can be an obstacle to taking the “first step”. Contrary to this idea, one of the recommendations made by the entities was the need to maintain an “open” spirit, ready to learn. “When people close themselves off, they end up losing motivation very quickly, you need to be available to learn”, highlights the Hoti Hotéis group.
With this in mind, the Job Fair featured the “Mentor Hour” dynamic, where questions regarding the creation of a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and other questions related to the job market and career progression were answered. This was a moment where young people had their concerns answered.
